How to begin Triathlon.

  • The Swim

The most difficult discipline to learn due to being the sport with the highest skill level. I almost always recommend being coached through the initial stages of swimming, until you have solid technical foundations in place.

Many facilities offer adult swim lessons and it is a great place to start! Reach out to a professional and begin learning to swim in readiness for racing.

Note: Never go open water swimming alone. Take a buddy and be safe.

  • The Bike

The sport you progress quickest in and the most expensive sport to begin. I won’t hid the fact that buying a bike is a minefield. There are 100s of differing brands, specs, colours, sizes and can come at a hefty price.

I recommend that your first bike purchase is second hand as Cyclists and Triathletes are renowned for looking after their kit. You can then purchase a better quality bike for a fraction of the price.

Cycling is all about time in the saddle. Once you’ve purchased the correct bike and equipment, get out and cycle as much as you can. You’ll be amazed how quickly you progress and the enjoyment that comes along with it.

Note: Cycling in a group is a great way to meet likeminded people, familiarise yourself with new routes and of course, a obligatory coffee stop.

  • The Run

The most common mistake when starting your running efforts is building up too quickly. Increasing distances and intensities too early on in the process will result in a breakdown (usually injury), it’s far more beneficial to start within yourself and build up over time. This will allow your body to condition itself to handle the impact from running which will aid your longevity in the sport.

Instead of: 1x 1 hour run per week.

Try: 3x 20min runs per week.

Note: Having the correct footwear is key to long term health. Buy a quality pair of running trainers to ensure you look after yourself and increase your chances of being able to train injury free!
